Protecting Top Secret Data While Extending UAV Mission Duration

A leading U.S. defense systems integrator was tasked with upgrading an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform engineered for long-range, intelligence-intensive missions. This aircraft, operating at high altitudes and extended ranges, is critical in ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) operations. With each mission generating vast volumes of sensitive data, the integrator needed a way to reliably store and protect that data without compromising the UAV’s range, efficiency, or survivability.

The UAV’s data-at-rest (DAR) architecture needed to meet stringent requirements from the National Security Agency (NSA) for Top Secret-level protection. The platform required multiple onboard network attached storage (NAS) devices to capture, store, and transmit mission data across segregated and classified networks, including real-time video, maps, sensor feeds, and system logs. These devices needed to be lightweight, power-efficient, and capable of operating in harsh airborne conditions.

Compounding the challenge, the program faced tight timelines and could not afford the delay or cost of developing a new encryption solution from scratch. The customer needed a rugged, NSA-approved, off-the-shelf NAS product that could be deployed immediately while maintaining security and adhering to SWaP constraints.
