An armoured vehicle turret is a unique piece of technology containing sophisticated electronic and EO/IR sighting systems to ensure accurate and fast firing on the move at the same time as keeping the crew safe from incoming fire. By its very nature, the limited room inside a turret leaves very little room to maneuver when designing these key features at the same time as having a reliable power source to keep them running 24/7 in all weathers and climates.
Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles are often moving across very rough terrain at high speeds while engaging an enemy. For the safety of the personnel on board and the accuracy of the weapon systems on board, the turret aiming and stabilization systems on these platforms must enable steady and precise control in all conditions.
In this feature, BATTLESPACE looks inside the turret of an armoured vehicle with those manufacturers who design and develop these systems, including Curtiss-Wright, IEE Displays, Oxley, and BCB International.
