Keeping New York City Moving

Keeping New York City Moving

The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is North America’s largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people across a 5,000 square mile travel area surrounding New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA network comprises the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined.

The Challenge

The MTA is upgrading more than 270 subway stations to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, improving access for nearly half of its riders. These upgrades include installing elevators, ramps, and enhanced safety systems such as fire alarms, digital screens, and CCTV.

Key challenges include:

  • Space Constraints: New systems, especially the CCTV video management system (VMS), must fit within existing enclosures to avoid costly construction
  • Environmental Resilience: Equipment must withstand dust, moisture, and harsh conditions typical of subway environments
  • Unattended Operation: The VMS must run 24/7 for 45 days without human intervention, providing at least 32TB of RAID 5 storage
  • System Integration: All upgrades must be installed with a minimum disruption of service, while integrating with existing infrastructure

These challenges are central to ensuring accessibility, safety, and reliability across the transit system.
